I’m Laura Dubber: Freelance writer, content creator and scriptwriter based in South Africa. I love working with words no matter the subject (from fashion to cycling to mining and construction) or platform (script writing, PR and social media being my forte).
In a few more words…
I’m Laura Dubber: Freelance writer, wife, and mom to the cutest (and naughtiest) dog in the world.
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember and it didn’t take me long to realise that I wanted to pursue it as a career. I obtained a Bachelor of Journalism from Rhodes University, specialising in writing & editing and discovered my interest for visual storytelling in an intensive short course in documentary making.
Writing career highlights
My career began as a news reporter in community newspapers, before moving into the world of business-to-business publishing where I was promoted to editor of two fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) magazines by the age of 22. Highlights of my time here include representing the company at FMCG conferences in Spain and Canada, diversifying the company’s digital platforms and overseeing the entire magazine production process from conception to publication. After three years, I moved into the communications space for a non-profit organisation, where I developed my proposal and report writing skills, social media management and dabbled in some graphic design for social media, marketing and donor relations.
In April 2014, I made the decision to go out on my own and set up Red Pen Communications. I have worked on an array of projects over the years – creating content for fashion brands, event marketing and PR, infrastructure development, a mining and construction expo, a banking magazine, a youth leadership NPO, early childhood development service providers and an annual publication for a lifestyle estate.
My most recent highlights include securing over R2 million in PR coverage for a new annual cycle race through a highly successful social media campaign, and script writing for the first and second season of the NBC Universal production, How Do I Look? South Africa.
I have been a member of the Southern African Freelancers’ Association (SAFREA) since 2014. I am actively involved in the organisation’s social media and website portfolios, and have been part of the executive committee since 2017.
Home and away
I am currently based in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga (an easy drive away from Joburg and Pretoria) and I’m willing and able to travel anywhere for assignments.
How did we end up living in the middle of nowhere? In 2016, my husband and I set off on a trip of a lifetime, backpacking from Mexico down to Argentina and Brazil over eight months. We returned to South Africa with incredible memories, friends from all over the world, and a desire to settle in a small town near the coast…we got lucky and landed in eMalahleni, surrounded by a sea of coal mines and power stations. Isn’t life a beautiful adventure? I cannot wait to see where it takes us next!
